Our Role

Dave and George

The Parramatta Unit of the NSW State Emergency Service is the primary combat agency which responds to floods and storms within the Parramatta Council area. These calls can range from single events i.e. a tree falling, to widespread emergency situation where complete emergency management procedures are implemented and coordinated by the unit along with logistics, crews and priorities.

All members of the unit are volunteers, they receive no payment of any type. Members volunteer their own time to train, support other rescue services, support the council, and respond to Requests for Assistance in all weather and all hours.

The unit is financially supported by community donations, the NSW State Emergency Control and the Parramatta City Council. The Parramatta Unit Controller presents to and works with the Parramatta City Council as well as other emergency services to ensure that the unit can support the community in the best ways possible.

Generally speaking each SES unit works within a council area, and as such the Parramatta unit works closely with the Parramatta council supporting the community within its area. The Parramatta unit is often called out of area to assist with storm and response situations in neighbouring areas as well as deployments throughout Australia.

The unit will also perform the following roles

  • Flood and Storm Operations

  • Floodboat Operations and Evacuation Activity
  • Tsunami Response
  • Search and Rescue
  • Assistance to other emergency services as required

  • Community Education

  • Training
